Guadalcanal: Naval Power
September 2013 With Semper
Fi! Guadalcanal we added a new type
of unit to the Panzer Grenadier system,
the warship. The very first volume had a river
gunboat, but Guadalcanal introduced genuine
blue-water destroyers and cruisers.
Within
the scope of the game these units perform
very few of the functions usually assigned
to warships, instead serving solely to provide
gunnery support to units ashore. The counters
we provided are quite generic, as suits the
game: it’s not about the Navy, it’s
a game about the Marines. We’ve got
plenty of other games that glorify the U.S.
Navy.
However, we know that gamers like their
toys. Here we’ll list the actual ships
in each scenario, and we’ll provide
a sheet of free downloadable counters you
can cut and paste. These are double the size
of the counters in the game; use them exactly
the same way as in the standard game but center
them on the hex they occupy.
“Fire Support Group Mike” appears
in several of the early scenarios with one
light cruiser and two destroyers. The actual
warships involved were the light cruiser San
Juan and the destroyers Buchanan
and Monssen.
In our scenario book Jungle
Fighting, Scenario 32 “To
The Poha” includes the Cactus Striking
Force of one destroyer. This was Radford;
three others were available and could
have been called in but the Japanese player
is in enough trouble already in this scenario.
